Front month live cattle futures are higher at midday lead by a $1.45 gain for April. The back months are 2 to 10 cents in the red. Feeder cattle are up triple digits following big gains on Friday. Midday prices are $0.55 to $2.30 higher. Cheaper corn and higher finished cattle futures are a bullish combo for feeders. The CME Feeder Cattle Index was $1.04 lighter at $134.45 on 1/14. Early week cash trading has yet to develop, USDA’s weighted average prices show the bulk of last week’s business was $111 in the South and $109 in the North. Wholesale Boxed Beef prices were higher this morning. Choice boxes were up $2.60 cwt. to $217.64. Select boxes were $205.96 after a 12 cent bump. USDA estimated last week’s FI cattle slaughter through Saturday at 651,000 head. YTD slaughter is estimated at 1.369 million head, compared to 1.605 million head at this point in 2020.
